Church of the Nazarene
The Church of the Nazarene was organized in Union
on June 6, 1926 in the Town Hall. On June 29, 1926, the church was incorporated
as the "Church of the Nazarene, of Union, Maine." On February 16,1927 land was
transferred from Hester R. Ames to the Church of the Nazarene for the purpose
of erecting a church building. The building of the church was begun and work
completed on October 27, 1928. In 1964 a steeple was raised on the roof of the
church on "Cobb's Hill". The light of the cross on the steeple has never burned
out since it was added to the building. It can be seen evenings by those traveling
route 17 from either Augusta or Rockland. Worship service is held every Sunday
at 9:00 a.m. at 85 Townhouse Road. Sunday School for all ages is at 10:30a.m.

.

Blooming Cross at PUMC.

Lent Begins with Ash
Wednesday Service at PUMC
Michelle Grube, pastor of Union’s People’s
United Methodist and Searsmont
United Methodist
Churches, will conduct an Ash Wednesday
Service on February 21 at 7
PM at
the PUMC, which is located on Depot Street, just off the Common, in Union.
Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, which is a
period of 40 days set aside by Christians for their spiritual
preparation for Easter. Pastor
Grube shares these thoughts for Lent:
“fast from criticism and feast on praise; fast
from self-pity and feast on joy; fast from resentment and feast on
contentment; fast from selfishness and feast on service; fast from fear
and feast on faith.” For
more information or to speak with the pastor, please call 785-4114.
Lenten
Study “Why Did Jesus Die?”
The
People’s United Methodist Church (PUMC) of Union
will host a six week Sunday evening Lenten study series entitled
“Why Did Jesus Die?” written by Robert Kleinke. Each week, beginning
Sunday, February 25, there will be a light supper at 5:00 PM in the
vestry on the lower level of the church followed at 5:30 by a session
of the thought provoking study series, in which a grand jury
investigates the trial and execution of Jesus.
Families are invited and there will be
children’s activities during the study sessions. The series will continue
on March 4, 11, 18, 25 and will be completed on April 1; the public is
invited to attend one or more sessions of the Lenten study series. The PUMC is located on Depot
Street (State
Route #235), just off the
Common, in Union.
For more information or to speak with the pastor, Michelle
Grube, please call 785-4114.
PUMC Moves Service Downstairs to Save on
Energy
The People’s United
Methodist Church (PUMC) of Union will again move its winter worship
services to the vestry on the lower floor of the
church. “The 10:30 Sunday morning
services were held in this room last year,” reports Worship
Committee chairperson Connie Day; “there were some doubts
about the move, but services continued to be well attended and the
experiment was deemed successful and worth repeating during the coldest
months of the year in order to save on fuel consumption. After the
services it takes only a few minutes to move and stack the chairs, so
that informal conversation can continue at the coffee
hour, where "Free Trade Coffee" is served to promote fair
wages to the growers."
The
PUMC is located on Depot Street, just off the Common in
Union. A nursery attendant is available during the regular
Sunday 10:30 worship time and Sunday School classes are held in the
classrooms following the “Children’s
Message.” Adult Bible Study classes are held on
Thursday evenings in homes. For more information or to speak
with Pastor Michelle Grube, you may call 785-4114.

Starting Monday, January 22, at
1:00 p.m. a low-impact aerobics class for seniors will be offered in
the lower level of People's
United Methodist Church, Depot St, Union,
for 8 weekly one-hour sessions. There is no charge for the

Several exercises will improve balance and light weights will be
provided for exercises to strengthen bones and muscles. Each
class will start and end with appropriate stretching, warm-up and
cool-down exercises. The program is good for beginners or
those who already are in an exercise program. Participants
can work at their own level of fitness and the program will be
explained at the first class.
Instructor Joanne
Borden received her Certification as an RSVP Exercise Trainer in
December 2004. She has conducted several classes in the
Rockland area since January, 2005. Presently she is
conducting a class on Thursday mornings at the Lincoln Center in
Rockland. Joanne is a participant in the weekly Healthy
Seniors Class that has been held at the YMCA in Rockport since April
2005. She also conducts the class if the instructor is
unavailable. Joanne is currently the Chairman of the RSVP
Advisory Council for Knox, Lincoln and Waldo counties. She is
retired and resides in Appleton with her husband.
